Why am I waking up so frequently in the middle of the night to use the restroom?!

Question: Why am I waking up so frequently in the middle of the night to use the restroom.?
I'm 20 years old, in good health and at a good weight. Even if I make sure to pee before I go to bed and avoid drinking fluids a couple hours before I sleep, I still wake up 1 to 3 times a night to use the restroom! This is very frustrating- could something be wrong with my bladder.? What could it be.? (No, I'm not pregnant)Health Question & Answer

If this is a brand new problem (you never used to have to get up at night before, but all of a sudden do now in the last few weeks) then a urinary tract infection and diabetes are the two most likely possibilities, both of which you should get checked for and ruled out as soon as possible. Any kind of drastic change in your kidney or bladder function over a short period of time is one of those "red flags" that your body uses to tell you that something is going on and needs to be checked out. Obviously if you've made a lifestyle change that coincides with the change in getting up at night (such as, if you recently started drinking 12 glasses of water per day when you hadn't before) then that could very well be the cause. But in the absence of anything like that, it's well worth your while to get checked out if this is a new problem for you.

If it's a problem you've always had (or just a minor worsening of something that's always been there) then chances are it's just something about how your body naturally is -- you have a small bladder, an overactive bladder, a fast metabolism, or high kidney function during the night. In that case, if you're in generally good health you probably don't have much to worry about (except for the annoyance factor, of course). If you're really bothered by how much you have to go during the night, there are meds that can reduce the body's urine production during the night -- otherwise, it's just the way your body is and the best you can do is try to find a way of coping with it that reduces the annoyance factor to as little as possible.Health Question & Answer

It could be that you have a mild bladder infection and this is causing you to urinate more often than usual. See your doctor, he/she will require a sample for analysis to determine if anything is wrong. These things are easily cleared up with an antibiotic.Health Question & Answer
