I have mold (proven) in my rental home, how do i get out of my lease?!

Question: I have mold (proven) in my rental home, how do i get out of my lease.?
a month ago I found mold growing in a room of our house. we have been here a total of 3 months. we called the management company, and they claimed nothing was wrong. they sprayed something on the wall and said it was gone. I kept calling them and telling them that no it has not gone, and they need to test for mold. so finally after a month they had an inspector in to run test. they found stachybotrys on the swap test, as well as high levels in the air of the home. They now come to me and state they are taking this seriously and are going to get someone in the remove it as well as sanitize everything. I have family visiting for a reunion, as well as work and have a life. I cannot go through all this, I want to leave. How do I get out of my lease with out them giving me a bad reference, and I want my security deposit backHealth Question & Answer

It sounds like they are doing all that they can so I doubt that you will be able to get out of your lease.Health Question & Answer

You are on a lease which means it's a contract so you can't break it without penalty. Most governments have a tenancy board that you could try and contact to work out a give and take solution between you and the owner. There may be compensation available. The fact that they are fixing the problem shows that they are taking it very seriously. The tenants board would probably set a hearing that you all attend and they can demand that the work be done within a specific time line. If they haven't done so, then you would have solid ground to be released from your lease. In the meantime you can demand to be rent free while the work is being carried out, which the board would enforce. Good luck.Health Question & Answer
