Nocturnal Leg Cramps... I've tried all the usual "cures" with only minimal help... Any ideas?!

Question: Nocturnal Leg Cramps... I've tried all the usual "cures" with only minimal help... Any ideas.?
While the cramps are primarily in the calves, I also get them in the feet as well. I know how to stop the cramps once they start, what I'm interested in doing is PREVENTING them. They REALLY hurt!

Here's what I do now that is recommended in the literature... I take Vitamin C, D, E, Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium supplements. I try to eat a banana or cantaloupe every day when I can.

Any other suggestions.?

Thanks ahead of time for your ideas.Health Question & Answer

Keep your legs warm with a blanket or by wearing socks even if it's not very cold inside the room and don't stretch your legs.probably you will not get any cramps.Insted of taking so many vitamins, just take 1 cap.a day of vit.E-400 i.u.and there will be no cramps. For no cramps without medicines-do the following exercise for 5 minutes at any time of the day.Sit on your knees with feet turned backwards and heels facing the roof. Now sit down completely with your bottom resting on your heels.straighten your back and bend backwards a little from your lower back level. If you can't sit in this position for 5 minutes at a stretch, then do it in 3 sets of 2 minutes each.you will be surprised since there will be no nocturnal cramps. TIP:Keep hot water and salt handy while going to sleep. In case of a cramp, take half a cup (50ml. )of hot water with salt and the cramp will disappear in 5 minutes.Health Question & Answer

Hey Kathy,
Well, since your a "Nurse", advising on such things as 12 ounces of your favorite colored (flavor) Gatorade ("It's not just for gators anymore.") an hour or two before bed or starting out your slumber with your feet slightly elevated by a pillow (kick it out later). Then you might try getting a hot stud to keep the blood flowing during the night.
Don't try using your profile picture on eharmony for that one. I think that's where you got the banana advice.
Good luck Mikey-keep kickin'Health Question & Answer

How much water do you drink.? That is one of the symptoms of not enough water. I know that lack of some vitamins cause leg cramps, so doesn't lack of fluids. also, over use of muscles can be another reason. Health Question & Answer

Leg cramps are often attributed to low salt in the body system. My doctor once gave me quinine used to combat malaria and it helps. Athletes are often victims legs cramps due to loss of salt when they perspire.Health Question & Answer

Since eating bananas didn't work, try taking a warm bath before bed time and drinking Gatorade. It works.Health Question & Answer
