as far as i'm aware its something to do with the tiny hairs in the back of your throat, its burns and numbs them. This means you dont cough for something like 10 mins. In the long run though your infection may last longer.

I can tell you why, it is because you are chemically burning off the cilia.
I don't smoke. I forgot to tell you cilia are microscopic hair like projections that constantly flick the sh!t up that we all breath in, but you smoker like to keep that sh!t. Each to their own.
