Do you think depression can cause illness, or does chronic illness cause depression...?!

Question: Do you think depression can cause illness, or does chronic illness cause depression....?
...I've been treated for depression for a few years now, but I always seem to be developing new illnesses (allergies I've never had before, and severe pains throughout my body).....my doctors say that they are not related - that my immune system seems to not be working properly and that is why I'm always sick. They send me for all kinds of tests, and say it is just going to take time to track-down the cause.

I just wonder if anyone else has had similar experiences, and how did you deal with them.? I can't help but think that if I could cure myself of the depression, I wouldn't feel as bad. Any thoughts.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Depression is an illness in and of itself. It is usually caused by a low level of serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical our brain produces to help maintain our "Happy Feelings". In chronic "Clinical Depression" this condition is usually treated wit an antidepressant in the Serotonin re uptake class. There are several different ones and each person will respond slightly different to each one. Depression by itself gives you an overall feeling of being sick but is not the CAUSE of other illness although it can contribute to them.Health Question & Answer

That question is like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg.? To answer your question they both cause each other and they are both side affects of each other as well. Change your diet and get more exercise. Try to think more positively even if you feel like crying. It has helped me a lot, but it still sneaks up on me from time to time so watch out for it. I hope that helps you. BTW if your Dr can't make money on the cure he will not acknowledge it exists.Health Question & Answer

Simple NO!!!Health Question & Answer

I have had the opposite problem. Constant minor infections, body aches, swelling joints. After over a year of invasive and non invasive testing they finally diagnosed me with Hashimoto's and Lupus. Here is the kicker. Many doctors that I saw (9 total) just labeled me as depressed. They all gave me the same explanation when I said I have a great life except for being sick all the time, how is someone who is happy depressed. "Depression comes from the inside and has nothing to do with feeling sad". Like that one.?

I believe you need to find an immunologist or a homeopathic doctor who will look at your whole picture and can finally figure out why you are sick and in pain and once you start to feel better your depression will ease up.

Good luck and you need to be your own health care advocate.Health Question & Answer

Check out information on allostatic on the link below and other sites. It's surprising to know that many practitioners still do not grasp the concept of holism. As you know, the mind sits in the brain, which is a part of the body (soma). Major depression is both an emotional and a physical illness related to neurotransmitters and pathways in the brain involved with mood, sleep, appetite, energy, and many other human experiences.

Depression and even anxiety can result from (as well as contribute to) physical problems from autoimmune disorders to diabetes, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome and so many other disorders. I urge you to check out the link below. Things like chronically elevated serum cortisol (your body's own steroids) can lead to dysfunction in the brain and hurt your immune system making you more likely to get sick from an infection while at the same time making you more likely to develop inflammatory illnesses like autoimmune arthritis and other problems.

It's an artificial notion in Western society that the mind and the body are separate. They are not separate. This is called "dualism". The Chinese and other Asian cultures have know this for centuries. Think holistically.
