ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA is what follows a cold. Your ear becomes involved and can end up getting severe pain. The pain usually settles in a day or two but can last up to a week. Sometimes the ear drum can rupture, discharging pus but heals quickly.

Ear discharge is drainage of blood, ear wax, pus or fluid from the ear. Discharge may also be caused by minor irritation or infection. A ruptured eardrum causes white, slightly bloody or yellow discharge from the ear.

The middle ear is connected to the nasal cavity & the throat by means of 1 passageway the "eustachian tube"..and if it isn't draining properly, pressure in the ear rises and the ear becomes painful & often infected.

When to call a physician;

Discharge is white, yellow, clear or bloody
Discharge is the result of an injury
Discharge lasted more than 5 days
When there is severe pain
When there is hearing loss
When discharge is associated with other symptoms such as fever or headache.

The doctor can take a sample of your ear drainage (if need be) and send it to a lab. As you are well aware of, anti-inflammatory or antibiotic medicines are placed in the ear... whereas ruptured eardrum antibiotics are taken by mouth.
