Answers:
Pin worms are the most common type of parasitic worm in temperate regions like the United States and Europe. By some estimates, up to half the population in developed countries is walking around with these worms. The worms are nocturnal and so are typically more detectable at night. The worms and the eggs can sometimes be seen at the rectum at night, this is how you check children. However, it is impossible to check yourself really and you may have no symptoms. If you did have pin worms, you might have rectal itching and some people, a very few, report recurrent abdominal cramping. Mostly these worms are harmless but if you are bothered by the possibility, medicine is available at any drug store, usually near lice medicines, or you can ask your doc for a prescription. The medicine is safe and commonly used for children, it is not safe for preg. women.
The next most common type of worm is the kind we commonly think of as transmitted by cats and dogs is typically called "round worm" but round worm refers to many species. Hook work is the proper term and these are the type that cause abdominal symptoms like diarrhea and bloody stool. These worms are visible in stool.
Other types of worms can infect the brain, kidneys etc.
If you think you might be infected, go to the doctor and give a stool sample. This is very important to prevent transmission to other people and prevent serious illness in yourself. Some worms start their cycle in the intestines before moving on to major organs, so get help right away. Even if you haven't traveled abroad, you can catch serious worms in the U.S. like Raccoon Roundworm. We had a puppy almost die this spring when she had an infestation of some icky, uncommon worm. The wormer available for pets kills all types of worms and would have prevented this; treat older pets periodically and new pets even if the breeder claims they already did it. Don't ingest pet wormer, it is not safe for humans.
Just call the doc, get your meds, wash your sheets and bath tub and under your fingernails. Good luck!Health Question & Answer
