Can sudden withdrawal from long-term heavy alcohol use kill you?!

Question: Can sudden withdrawal from long-term heavy alcohol use kill you.?
I'm only 16. I'm asking because for the last 2 years especially, I've been doing heavy drinking 3-5 days a week usually with maybe one or two days in between binges. Now I'm just quitting. Completely quitting it.Health Question & Answer

No.
2 years is not long term although it seems like it when you are 16. But it is long enough for you to find out that's not what you want to do.
The substance abuse is what is bad for you, realizing there is a problem and quitting is the first step in the solution.

It sounds like you have figured out that heavy drinking ( or any substance abuse) is not the way to get things done. Apply yourself toward something positive instead and you will see how much the drinking was interfering with your productivity.
Look into a support group like AA or Alateen. It really helps to be able to discuss your situation with people that have been through what you are going through and can point you in the right direction. And it's free. 1-888-425-2666Health Question & Answer

Yes, it can. Long-term alcohol use and suddenly stopping can lead to seizures that can cause death. I was actually watching something the other day on Discovery Health about it. You are 16, you shouldn't be drinking anyway. I'm glad you've decided to quit, considering you're too young, it's a disgusting habit and its illegal. Your body isn't done developing yet, and that includes your brain. Alcohol prohibits growth, so do yourself a favor, and stop all of the BS. Focus on school, and being healthy.Health Question & Answer

Not a chance. You have been drinking for 2 years 3-5 days a week.? I was previously drinking 7 days a week and averaging over 75 beers per week for 5 years. I gave up due to stomach problems and didn't have the slightest problem in doing so. It sounds like you think that you are far more addicted then you actually are. It would be a good idea to quit before you do gain a problem but you seem to be over reacting to undue worry.Health Question & Answer

Good on you, thats a really hard thing to do and i hope you have people helping you through it.
My ex boyfriend was an alcoholic, and its a very hard and emotional problem to deal with.
I think the biggest thing for you to do is to understand why you are drinking so much. Once you understand why you drink it is a lot easier to stop. Suddenly stopping wont kill you because our bodies are not made to be dependent on alcohol. It is a poison and is probably setting you up for serious problems if you dont stop drinking so heavily.
Work out why you are drinking, remove that issue from your life, and you will stop using alcohol to deal with your problems. It is just shortening your life span.Health Question & Answer

for u probably not.
but for an alcoholic, yes.
its called delirium tremens and can kill u.
tachycardia (heart rate over 100 bpm), diaphoresis (sweating),
visual and auditory hallucinations are some of the symptoms.
this condition requires medical treatment.
best thing to do is avoid alcohol altogether.
alcoholism can also lead to liver cirrrhosis and its complications.
the liver makes proteins such as albumin and clotting proteins.
less albumin means lower vascular oncotic pressure and u get edema.
no clotting proteins means bleed.
complications include portal hypertension (the portal system runs through the liver).
as a result, more blood flows through ur collateral system and u can get esophageal varices which can rupture and bleed and hemorrhoids.
u can also get jaundice, fetor hepaticus and telangiectasia, ...
just don't drink.Health Question & Answer

no, not in your situation ... you will need to get hobbies and stuff, though so that you don't fall back in the habit ...

the heavy drinkers that have a physiological reaction to quitting drinking usually have at least a half a bottle of liquor every single night for 10 years or more ...Health Question & Answer

Actually, it can. I've heard about some cases with very old people. I think it's safe at 16.
