PDD-NOS, which is an autism spectrum disorder. I've read that normally people have a 1 in 150 chance of having a child with autism, but it jumps up to 1 in 20 for people who already have an autistic child.
My question is, does anyone know what my chances would be of having a child with classic autism or Rett's syndrome.? I'm not worried about having a child with PDD-NOS or Aspergers, but I do have concerns about having a child with classic autism.Health Question & Answer

Hi ...I am not sure but i was told i 'might' have another child with autism if i were to have another baby, i know a lady who has three children two girls and a boy the two older girls both have autism one more severe than the other the boy doesn't have problems, so i would say yes there is always a chance Health Question & Answer
To truly weigh your risk you should seek out help from a genetic counselor. If by chance your child's condition is a result of a genetic condition the risks of having another child with challenges could be much higher.
For example a mother, who carriers the Fragile X gene, has a 50/50 chance of passing it on with each pregnancy. Keep in mind Fragile X, like autism, is a spectrum disorder, and with girls only about 1/3 of them are as affected as their male counterparts. In a recent study of over 40,000 women, 1 in 130 women were carriers of Fragile X, it's important to rule Fragile X out.
A father who carries the Fragile X gene will not pass it to his sons, but all of his daughters will be carriers. For the most part carriers are unaffected but there are a few who are.
