What can a combination of alcohol and benzodiazepines do? Is it ever okay to take both , even in small doses?!

Question: What can a combination of alcohol and benzodiazepines do.? Is it ever okay to take both , even in small doses.?
I'm usually on ativan for anxiety, but yesterday I made the mistake of eating many rum chocolates, and totally didn't realize that the amount of rum in each one, and I ate alot througout the day, had alcohol in it, so technically I was on rum, and ativan.

I noticed later in the day I was getting dizzy, disoriented, I ouldn't think straight, and felt like passing out or puking.

Do the two just exacerbate the drunken like efect, or could they depress you so much that you can pass out.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Alcohol, in small amounts, can potentiate the CNS effects of many benzodiazepines. Tolerance may develop with chronic alcohol use. Rum chocolates usually use 1 tablespoon of light or dark rum per batch. It wouldn't be considered as "too much" even if you get to consume the entire box, unless the label indicates it used more rum than usual. Now that you know the effects of the two, you'd be more aware to limit yourself from taking too much alcoholic substances.Health Question & Answer

I use ativan too and although it is hard on your liver there are no long term consequences to mixing the two every once in awhile as long as it is in very low doses. Rum chocolate rocks by the way.Health Question & Answer
