How do you address your family doctor about depression without ...?!

Question: How do you address your family doctor about depression without ....?
sounding like a nutcase.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
You won't sound like a nutcase. I lot of sane people experience some form of depression. I did, mine even lasted about 2 years. I think it was a chemical imbalance actually. I think it is better to be honest with your doctor but be careful because more than likely his/her answer will be meds. I would not let them give you zoloft if you can keep from it. I have heard many story of people getting worse when taking that. I know you can beat this. It takes time.Health Question & Answer

Doctors have heard everything, so don't worry about that! First of all, do some reading about depression, consider whether you are experiencing any of the symptoms it presents...if so, just say to the doctor: I have been feeling down/blue/sad/hopeless (or whatever) recently and I am wondering if perhaps I have depression. I would like to be treated, as the feelings are very unpleasant.
Be as specific as you can be, for example, when did you start feeling bad, any specific event/situation related to it (e.g., since my Granny died or since I lost my job or since I flunked out of school), what the feelings make you want to do (do not be afraid to mention suicidal feelings to the doctor...only the truth can help the dr. decide how to treat you). There are both medications and talk therapies, either or both...sometimes it takes a while to find the best medication, the best therapy for your own situation, so be sure to let the dr. know if something is not working or has unpleasant side effects. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

doctors are trained for that, it's not new to them if a patient asks for help about that .. in fact, the more detailed, brutally honest you are about how you feel and think, the better they would know on how to help you, so don't be afraid to say everything that bothers you or concerns you, it helps them track the root of the problem even more.Health Question & Answer

Just tell him/her that you haven't been yourself and your feeling low.In fact if you tell the nurse when you are checking in-getting blood pressure, temp etc.. she will give you the form to fill out before the doctor comes in. Then you and the doctor can discuss the results.Health Question & Answer

who cares what anyone else thinks...tell the doc all about it and he will respond professionally or lose his license and get sued.

unless you consider suicide an option, i recommend pursuing an eastern belief system: a health body leads to a healthy mind. eat right and exercise daily, and in a month or two you will feel better. doctors give pills which do not solve the problem, it just adds pills to the list of things you need to deal with for a healthy body and mind.Health Question & Answer

See a shrink. Not a family doc. I was miss diagnosed and they gave me the wrong meds. I almost caused my marriage to end. I am Bi-Polar, and they treated me for depression. The drugs caused a personality change. Please be careful.Health Question & Answer

Depression has nothing to do with being a "nut case". It is a disease that doctors treat often and medical professionals think nothing negative about you because of it.
Just be honest and he will help you.Health Question & Answer
