Being sure to be well hydrated is an excellent suggestion as is eating.

What will happen they have you lie on a cot. A technician will put a needle into your arm at your elbow. This will be attached to small tube that drains into a blood bag. You wil simply lie there until the bag is full. At that time the technician will remove the needle from your arm apply pressure with a cotton ball and tape it to your arm.

If you are donating through the American Red Cross they will have you sit in the canteen for awhile. They will give you something to drink and something to eat.Health Question & Answer

You'll have to read through a pamphlet and answer some questions like, "Have you ever been to Africa prior to 1970" and "Have you ever spent more that 24 hours in a prison." After that, they'll check your blood pressure, and the iron content of your blood. All they'll do is prick your middle finger with a pin, then collect a drop or two of blood. (It doesn't hurt a lot, it feels like your finger gets snapped by a rubber band).

After they do the tests on you, you'll be taken to one of the beds. They'll swab your arm with iodine or alcohol to disinfect the area, then they'll use a blood pressure cuff to find a vein in your arm. They always draw from a vein on the inside of your elbow. I suggest bringing a book, magazine, or a friend along to distract you when they put the needle in your arm, as this is the worst part. Again, it doesn't hurt that much, and just feels like you got snapped by a rubber band. After bleeding for a few minutes, they'll come back and take the needle out of your arm. After that, you get to go over to the "canteen" and get some cookies and juice.Health Question & Answer
