I am a paramedic. I do not know what a EMR is but I can speak regarding being an EMT and working in EMS. EMTs are divided into three levels in most states. That is EMT-B (Basic), EMT-I (Intermediate), or EMT-P (Paramedic). Some states only issue certificates and others issue licenses. Some issue either one, depending on level of education. There are much better paying fields in which to be employed, but there are none that overall allow as much autonomy as this one. Many employers offer a 24 hour shift, which allows you to work two days a week with quite a bit of off time (some say that EMS stands for E arn M oney S leeping). Many of us work two jobs and earn a decent living. Most of your money comes from overtime. The work is interesting and sometimes exciting and there is the personal satisfaction of knowing that you helped someone that was in trouble. Health Question & Answer

I am not an EMT, but I am a 4th year med student working in emergency. Its awesome, you can really feel you make a difference, but the times people die or you cant help do really hurt. You get better at handling it, but it can be tough. But you get to be someones help or even hero pretty often, which is cool :)Health Question & Answer
