Patient/doctor confidentiality with eating disorders?!

Question: Patient/doctor confidentiality with eating disorders.?
If I told my doctor I have an eating disorder (and I'm 18), would that qualify me as being suicidal so that she could tell my parents.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Not so she could tell your parents, no. If you are 18, she can't tell them anything. But she might be obligated to inform the proper authorities, who could then order you into hospital. As a rule, just having an eating disorder doesn't qualify as a suicide threat or attempt though. They don't consider slow self starvation a suicide threat, until it actually becomes a life threat. At that point, though, they usually do step in if you won't cooperate with treatment. Health Question & Answer
