Why do colds get worse at night?!

Question: Why do colds get worse at night.?
I have had a cold for 5 days now. I feel horrible when I get up, but after popping some vitamin C and eating, I feel ok through the day with an occasional sniffle or cough. But then at night, the horribleness returns with coughing, runny nose, sinus headaches, chest congestion...I'm not just talking about when I lay down for bed, but it is as soon as it becomes nighttime. I take vitamin C at night too. Why is it so much worse at night.?Health Question & Answer

One factor that may contribute to the additional discomfort of cold symptoms in the evening hours is the fact that the body is now horizontal rather than vertical. Standing or even sitting in an upright position during the daytime distributes the usual amount of pressure or gravity that is constantly applied to the body. When people are lying down in a prone position, that pressure is distributed differently, and may result in additional pressure on the sinus cavities. This phenomenon will certainly increase the level of discomfort experienced by the cold sufferer.

Another aspect of our body function that may play a role in the severity of common cold symptoms is our natural body rhythm or cycle. Sometimes referred to as the circadian cycle, this process adjusts the production of hormones based on the time of day. Hormones that are producing antibodies that fight fever and infection are more active during daylight hours, and slow down production at night. This means that our natural defenses are somewhat weaker at night, and may result in an upswing in the severity of the symptoms of colds.Health Question & Answer

Some people understand that the common cold symptoms are simply more noticeable at night, when there are fewer distractions to pull attention away from the discomfort. However, the fact is that there are one or two factors that may contribute directly or indirectly to an increase in the severity of common cold symptoms during the night.

The hormones that produce the antibodies needed to fight the virus or infection in your body are not as active during the evening hours when your body is slowing down for the evening then during the day when you are awake. These hormones would quicken white blood cell profuction in your blood which are key in your systems defenses. Therefore the symptoms of your cold are more severe at night than during the day.

Try taking a steamy shower before bed to open the nasal passages and a nice hot cup of tea with lemon and honey is always good to soothe your throat and your nose. It also helps to keep you hydrated. I usually put a couple extra pillows under my head and back too. That helps my nose from staying really clogged up.
