Ughhh... I have heartburn/sour stomach and nothing is helping!?!

Question: Ughhh... I have heartburn/sour stomach and nothing is helping!.?
I've gotten heart burn maybe.... 4 times in my 21 years of life. For the last week I have had sour stomach. I think it might be because of stress, my dog recently died, my boyfriend and I were having problems (we've mended them btw) and I have a group project at school and I'm the only one doing anything. I've tried to eat only bland foods, (mashed potatoes, rice) but its not working. I've tried ginger ale. I've tried Tums... they work for like 10 minutes. I had some prescription of Reglan (I had an upset stomach 2 years ago from my mom's cancer surgery) and I took one of those to ease it, it hasn't done much. I haven't tried pepcid or anything. I'm usually never affected by heartburn, I love spicy foods and eat them all the time. I keep burping and I feel like there's acid in my throat. I'm getting really frustrated, is pepcid and good idea or is there any home remedies I can try. If this doesn't go away by Monday I'm calling my doctor. Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Zantac - generic or prilosec. The precsription dosage is exactly double the otc dosage. also ,sometimes foods you least expect will trigger excess acid ,especially when under stress. Try baking soda for "emergency" relief, but don't rely on it over time. It contains sodium and may raise blood pressure, especially if you already have High BP.Health Question & Answer

Go to the doctor. In the meantime stay away from the spicy foods, caffeine, carbonated drinks, chocolate, mint, citrus fruits, anything that has citrus acid in it. The Reglan, pepcid and other otc acid reducers take a while to work. Have you tried one of the liquid heartburn relievers.? Before I was diagnosed with GERD I used the the liquids and they helped somewhat. Good Luck. Health Question & Answer

It is good that you have decided to see your doctor on Monday. Since you have had acid reflux so infrequently and you're only 21, you may need to get tested for oesophageal sphincter problems, Helicobacter Pylori and Barretts Oesophagus. It may be nothing serious and a short course of a Proton Pump Inhibitor may be all you need but it's better to be under a doctor's care.Health Question & Answer
