My grandma was put on hospice...?!

Question: My grandma was put on hospice....?
She quit eating nearly 2 weeks ago, and has not taken in any fluids for eight days. She has basically been sleeping for the last 2 weeks. How long can she last without food or water.? The nurse said 5-6 days, but we are at 8 days now and her vitals have remained stable. She has had a slight increase in her heart beat and a slight decrease in her BP, but nothing drastic.

I ask because it is so hard to watch; especially when my dad keeps thinking that she is going to snap out of it. She doesn't seem to be in physical pain, I just worry about her suffering...Health Question & Answer

About the suffering... Once the body does without food or water for a while, it really no longer craves it, and doesn't even miss it. Her electrolytes and dehydration will cause her to basically go to sleep. (not a bad way to go)

I am sorry for your situation, but I can say with a pretty certain heart that she isn't suffering. May peace be with you all.Health Question & Answer

she is probably tired and wants to leave. i think that you shoudl pray for her soul. that is what you should do. she is trying to leave and shes not in any pain yet. the doctors will know and you should just be there for her. she can hear and that is one of the last things that goes. so becareufl and take care.Health Question & Answer

The heart rate is increasing due to the BP decreasing sounds like the end is getting close. Good luck to you.Health Question & Answer
