Everyone's circadian (sleep-wake cycle) clock is different. Some people have distrupted sleep cycles so at face value it appears they sleep more than average when in fact they stop & restart the REM stage several times in a night. That's my long answer for no as long as they aren't couch potatoes or are unproductive.Health Question & Answer

Most people can manage with 8 hours, but some need more, especially teenagers.

The determinant of whether or not a person is lazy is not when or how much they sleep, but what they accomplish when they're awake.

Sleeping less should allow you to accomplish more, but if you can't function without the sleep, then get more sleep.

Needing more than 9 or 10 hours, however, indicates a problem.Health Question & Answer

There are many reasons for having to sleep longer than 8 hours per night. Some of the reasons for sleeping longer are given by others. It is true that we are all different and all need varying amounts of sleep. Of course, many of us wish we could sleep much less and there are a some folks who can do so.

There are also people who may have sleep disordered breathing (SDB). Most often, this will be obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The ineffective sleep causes one to continue to be tired. This can be fixed by a sleep study to determine if one has SDB. The sleep study will then tell what treatment will help, if any is required. In a case such as this, one couldn't be called lazy for sleeping more than usual. One's body is simply requiring longer sleep to make up for a lack of quality sleep.

Sleep deprivation is serious. Those who are sleep deprived drive a vehicle equivalently to one who is drunk, so there is no doubt that the lack of quality sleep is a great problem in this world. Those who are heavier tend to have more SDB, so as our country becomes more obese, the sleep disorders become more common.

I used to sleep 12-14 hours, and then had a sleep study. Now, I have a continuous positive airway pressure machine and a mask that I wear at night. I now sleep about 8-9 hours a night, and I like sleeping less than half of my life away. It has made a difference, and I no longer snore. That is a plus!Health Question & Answer

I consider it unhealthy, not lazy - there have been recent studies done that show that people who get 7-8 hours of sleep a night (not more, not less) have much better habits - like they smoke less, drink less, use drugs less, exercise more, eat healthier, etc. I think there is a correlation there, personally.Health Question & Answer

Some people just naturally need more or less sleep than others. If they are sleeping excessively though there are concerns about depression or other medical conditions being at cause. As well oversleeping can actually make you more tired. But if it's something regular - like say they need 9-10 hours and are productive while awake...don't worry on it.Health Question & Answer

some people require 8 to 10 hours of sleep to function well, this doesn't mean they are lazy, this means they know what they need to do to stay healthy.Health Question & Answer
