How do I relieve Panic Attacks...Any relevant experience?!

Question: How do I relieve Panic Attacks...Any relevant experience.?
I was in a car accident this year, and I have PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and everytime I go anywhere I get panicked. I've tried pills and they make them a WHOLE LOT worse. I'm currently seeing a psychologist and I get huge panic attacks when I see her too.
Does meditation work.? How do you do meditation.?

Any relevant experience would help. I'm so annoyed of them, I don't even leave my house unless I have to, or I go with my boyfriend only.Health Question & Answer

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....

Xanax doesn't help.?.? Man, that stuff makes everything right in my lil world....

Does your psychologist do hypnosis.? Mine does. It's a HUGE help. I've got ptsd too....well, nearly through it now... he was doing emdr with me and I think I'm close to a full recovery. So there ya go, maybe you should find out about emdr. Google it.

I've never really tried meditation.

If seeing your psychologist is giving you panic attacks, maybe you should find a new one.? I've apparently had ptsd for years and after trying many therapists, I found one I'm really comfy with and I look forward to seeing every week.

I have trouble leaving the house too so I know what you're going through. And it sucks.

Health Question & Answer

Meds DO work, if you try the right one. So keep trying.

Meditation works really well. I was at the hosp the other day, and the tech couldn't get a good EKG for me. He kept telling me to relax.

So I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and began my "mantra" Oh, Lord Jesus!! Breathing together with the mantra over and over, within 2 minutes he had exactly what he needed--an EKG on a relaxed patient. I had been quite agitated because I was signing in for surgery.

Meditation works for me, obviously. Even just listening to your breaths and counting them calms you. I meditate every night before I sleep and it relaxes me tremendously. And knowing MY mantra is calling on the name of the Lord--that's prayer!!--I pray myself to sleep, pray myself to calmness--it's great!
