Question: Can anyone help me.? 5 days ago my ear closed up and I can not hear anything out of it. .?
That night I started throwing up and and extremely dizzy. I went to the doctor and they said I had an inner ear viral infection so they couldn't give me antibiotics. So they gave me med for being dizzy and said I will have to wait for it to pass. I still can't hear and I am so dizzy. All I can do is lay down or everything is spinning (vertigo) Has anyone every had this.? Do you know how long it will last. I am so miserable and sick.? Thank you!!Health Question & Answer

Answers:
The symptoms you describe, vertigo and dizziness, are most often associated with labyrinthitis. Labyrinthitis is an inner ear (rather than middle ear) process that most often results from a viral infection. Labyrinthitis will often occur after an upper respiratory infection. Rarely, it can be bacterial and may also be a result of trauma to the temporal bone.

Having said that, if your external ear canal is swollen, painful, and inflamed than you may have otitis externa which is typically treated with antibiotics.

If your external ear canal is just fine than you likely just have labyrinthitis (possibly with a superimposed middle ear infection). I can tell you that that is about the most miserable thing you can possibly get that doesn't kill you. It will last for about 7 - 14 days and the only treatment is symptomatic relief. Antiemeteics (phenergan) and meclizine prescribed by your doctor should help.

Hope you feel better.
