What would be the positive and negative effects of lowering the drinking age to 18?!

Question: What would be the positive and negative effects of lowering the drinking age to 18.?
Currently in the United States it is illegal to drink alcohol under 21 years of age. Even at low doses, alcohol significantly impairs the judgment and coordination required to drive a car or operate machinery safely. Low to moderate doses of alcohol can also increase the incidence of a variety of aggressive acts, including domestic violence and child abuse.

Please answer the said question, in your short opinion or long supported answer. I am a very open and ethical person so enlighten me with your knowledge.

Here's some background info:

"Alcohol is everywhere," said Steven Harris, a 14-year-old from San Bruno, California. "Young people see ads everywhere. We see drinking on TV and in the movies, and we see it at parties and at home. And it is probably harder for teens to get into an R-rated movie than to get alcohol. It's a joke."

Two out of three teens, aged 13-18, said it is easy to get alcohol from their homes without parents knowing about it. One third responded that it is easy to obtain alcohol from their own parents knowingly, which increases to 40 percent when it is from a friend's parent. And one in four teens have attended a party where minors were drinking in front of parents.

I live in Alberta, Canada and the drinking age here is 18. I've always thought it was too low. Maybe 21 is better because your decision making skills are more developed. Would drinking and driving and crime be lessened if we changed the age.?
Drinking and driving, statistically, is done by people over 25 here, so that argument is out the window. Alcohol related crime and domestic abuse is also related to adults over 21. People at 18 are not getting into trouble, statistically, like those in their twenties are.
We believe we can't keep people from drinking until they are 21 if we are asking them to vote and fight for our country at 18. If they are adults at 18 then the choice to drink is theirs. I guess raising the age to vote and go to war to 21 is out of the question.
Perhaps the problem is not that the age is too low, or that it's readily available regardless of your age, but our attitudes toward it. We are far too casual about it and in Alberta we drink more beer per capita than any other province in the country. It's an interesting issue that has been around and will be around for a long, long time.Health Question & Answer

BRUTALLY: Some things about changing the drinking age to 18 is that most people under the age of 18 already buy alcohol anyway and they are alllowed to smoke but not drink wtf.? smoking kills u and alcohol just makes u act crazy. so i think u shoudl be able to drink since ur old enough to smoke, drive, and even get draft or join the army.Health Question & Answer

I think more importantly is the fact that at 18 you can vote and die for your country, I think that qualifies you as an adult and therefore the choice should be yours.Health Question & Answer

Australia's drinking age is 18. Personally I think we start drinking at much the same age as in the states....at about 14.

Teens are going to drink whatever the legal age is. They don't care. They will experiment.

The only way to stop it is to prosecute parents/adults who obtain the alcohol for the kids. Start jailing them and making an example.

If you are doing this for a study of some sort, perhaps you compare stats from Australia and US in relation to alcohol related violence in teens, alcohol poisoning in teens etc.Health Question & Answer
