Weird visual effects often precede a migraine. I get a small patch somewhat off center of my vision, so I can't exactly "look at" it, that is inverted, as in upside down. It makes me think of a computer monitor gone wacky in a small patch of the screen.
Some folk report "stars" or "fireworks" types of visual effects before a migraine.
In extreme cases, blindness occurs (not a "black" or "dark" visual impression, like at night or when your eyes are closed, but a lack of any visual input). This is my wife's experience.
Apparently, this is from a lack of oxygen to the brain, caused by constricted blood vessels, usually the result of tension or excitement. Depression can precipitate this effect. The reduced blood flow causes the weird visual effects, and then triggers the headache.
Some folk experience the pain with no warning at all, or the visual effects are so insignificant as to escape notice. That's when the other symptoms noted here come in to play.
If you tend to have migraines, it is worthwhile to either seek medical attention, as some recent medications can relieve the symptoms, or, more importantly, address the source of the tension or anxiety that causes the blood constriction in the first place. Sometimes, a change of situations can eliminate the problem.
