Which condition in a loved one would be more heartbreaking to you?!

Question: Which condition in a loved one would be more heartbreaking to you.?
Having a nonfunctioning body/intact mind.? Or having a healthy body/nonfunctioning mind.?

I have an otherwise healthy 13-year-old nephew with severe autism, and it breaks my heart that I can't get through to him. It's like he's there...but he's not. I also have an extremely intelligent and loving relative whose body is failing him rapidly and it hurts me to know that he'll never live to do the things he wants to do so badly.

I would have to say the former simply because the " person " is still there with the two of us still able to communicate and interact. However, I'd always feel a bit selfish for feeling that way, because I'm almost certain it'd be easier for the victim if the latter were true...Health Question & Answer

I can't say that either is better than the other. What I can say is that they're set up for greater things in the next life / heaven / divine connection with God, whatever... I believe this so to justify my heartbreak/guilt for not being able to help them. I feel that while people like this are in our lives, it's our responsibility to love them till we pass, they pass, and we reunite with them with all of our limitlessness. Health Question & Answer

I think both are heartbreaking. I have a mom that is physically in great shape but her mind is going. I also have a friend that has a child with autism and that is so sad for the mom and those that love the child. I got her the book by Jenny McCarthy and it seems to have helped her.Health Question & Answer

Its so hard. I guess its as long as its short. Both are tragic and heartbreaking. If I had to choose for myself, I guess I would prefer to have a non-functioning brain because at least I wouldn't be aware of my disability, it would just be difficult for those around me who have unconditional love for me.Health Question & Answer

Healthy body/nonfunctioning mind would be more heartbreaking.

Medical technology has come a long way. Physical challenges can be overcome through technology moreso than mental challenges. Case in point: Stephen Hawking.Health Question & Answer
