Does stress cause brain damage?!

Question: Does stress cause brain damage.?
I'm a teenager and I argue with my mom almost every day (usually to the point of screaming). It is a quite a stressful environment at my house now. This has been a problem for about two years.

What I'm wondering is could this cause damage to the hippocampus or other parts of the brain. I've read a few studies that say stress does damage, but I'm not sure if my stress is enough to cause anything significant.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Extremely stressful situations (things like wartime scenarios) can cause brain damage, which is being investigated for links to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I would say that while your situation is definitely sucky and you may need help repairing your relationship with your Mom, it probably isn't enough to cause PTSD or lasting brain damage.

P.S. -- Studies have shown that the stressors that lead to PTSD can be mitigated through relationships with other trusted adults. While you probably won't get PTSD from this, I would strongly encourage you to seek out a mentor with whom you can rationally and calmly discuss what's going on at home.Health Question & Answer
