I'm glad you're getting help while you're still young. Problems don't often go away with age they only get worse. The first time I saw a psychiatrist in my twenties I was afraid that I would be asked questions that I couldn't possibly answer and that my failure to do so would upset the doctor. This didn't happen of course. He was a kind and thoughtful man who didn't ask impossible questions and allowed me plenty of time to respond.

You'll feel such relief when you do go and even though you may not be fully relaxed until you've been going for awhile it won't EVER be as difficult as the first time. I would recommend that you have some water with you, though. My mouth got so dry I could barely speak at first, which just made me more nervous.

What you're beginning can be challenging but rewarding. And if, after a few visits, you don't feel the person you're seeing is a good fit for you please don't give up thinking they're all the same. If your insturance allows you to see someone else then you should give it another try. The first doctor we see isn't always the best for us. Hope all goes well for you! Health Question & Answer

Depends on whether your psychiatrist is just a psychiatrist or also a psychologist/therapist. I have found that psychiatrists' (usually the people who do the prescribing of medication) appointments are kind of uneventful. You basically describe your symptoms to them and they ask you questions and figure out what medications to give you or how to change your dosage.

A therapy session is much more involved. You talk about your life, things that bothered you, things that made you happy; basically anything you feel is worth talking about. These are a lot more personal.Health Question & Answer
