I have a sleep question?!

Question: I have a sleep question.?
Sometimes when I'm really tired when I go to bed, I start to nod off and all of a sudden I'll jerk for a second or twitch for a second. Is it just my muscles trying to relax.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
These movements are called myoclonic jerks, and scientists are not certain exactly why they occur. However, the most highly supported hypothesis is that they result from decreased inhibitory signaling from cranial neurons.

While we receive signals from our cranial neurons telling us to do certain actions, we also constantly receive inhibitory signals all over our bodies, for example to our muscles, keeping them "still" until they get a positive signal. As we drift off to sleep, these inhibitory signals decrease. This is probably due to the fact that they are not needed during REM sleep (because our body is in a state of paralysis). Because our body can't just have a sufficient amount of inhibition one moment and turn it completely off the next moment, we have a period where these inhibitors are waning. This is the time we are most likely to experience myoclonic jerks.

So in a way, you are correct. This is the phase where your muscles are relaxing, in that they are going in to a phase where they will not be receiving any signals to action OR receiving inhibitory signals to keep them from action.

Yes, your body is just trying to get comfortable and adjusted to the mattress. And when you spread your legs out, your legs and your body are just relaxing. Health Question & Answer
