Could i have died from choking on soda?!

Question: Could i have died from choking on soda.?
earlier today i was at a friends house with my boyfriend and kids and my 1 year old was sittin next to him and bit him well my b/f told me about it right when i was takin a drink of pepsi and i didnt want to spray it everywhere cuz a playstation was on the floor next to me so i tried to hold it in well that caused me to choke on it. i couldnt breath at all i kept coughing but even though i did that and tried to calm down i still couldnt breathe then i started blackin out and all of a sudden i felt like i was going to die. the whole time i couldnt see anything or anyone but i knew what was around me it was really weird. after about 5 min i went out side i should have done that right away but was too freaked out. so my question is had i not gotten outside and got fresh air or stop choking is it possible that i could have died.? First, you almost drowned on soda, not choked. Second, no you wouldn't have died. The feeling you had was hypoxia, lack of oxygen due to the violent natural coughing you where doing. Worst case, you would have blacked out and then you would breath normally. If you didn't get back up, 911 medics would come and make sure your ok. The only way you would have died from lack of oxygen is if your airway was totally blocked. Soda can't do that. Even if you had a lot of soda in your lungs, your body would have naturally shoved that nasty stuff out. Health Question & Answer

I don't think so. If it had been a solid piece of food then that would be different. The soda went down the wrong way and some it might have affected your lungs. Once you stood up then you relieved the pressure and you recovered fairly quickly. Not a nice experience that you want to repeat. So relax...don't worry..be happy!Health Question & Answer

The only way you could die from choking on a liquid beverage is if the liquid filled your lungs to the point where you could not get enough air because the lungs were already filled with liquid - which is drowning. It takes close to a liter to fill the lungs.

You can't intentionally override the coughing when you are not getting enough air - it is a reflex, so you were not at any risk (even though it feels like you are dying).

The weird feelings you experienced are actually from hyperventilation - it not because you couldn't breathe, its because your breathing is too fast and shallow to get rid of the carbon dioxide.Health Question & Answer
