Why cant I drink alcohol anymore without getting a migraine?!

Question: Why cant I drink alcohol anymore without getting a migraine.?
I used to drink every weekend ( and sometimes more) through my early twenties, lots of binge drinking with the girls. After having my baby in 2005 I pretty much stopped. Now I find whenever I have a drink, even just one or two I get a migraine and vomit. Every single time this happens. Does anyone know why.? I cant even have a drink or two with a meal because I am guarenteed to get sick. It starts usually after the first drink and the headaches stays for a couple days.Health Question & Answer

Ah! This is something that develops in many folks, especially women (who experience a disproportionate number of migraines by the way). Various types of alcohol (especially red wines and the like) contain substances called "tannins" which are known migraine causes. In addition, alcohol when metabolized produces oxygen free radicals which are also known headache causes. Whether it's hormonal changes, or a condition that's been present but you never made the connection before, basically for you alcohol is a "no thanks" beverage now. Otherwise you're looking at several visits to the Emergency Room to get IV antacid, fluid and antiemetic drips. Best to read up on dietary causes of migraines to get an idea of what to avoid. Be sure to follow up with your regular doctor asap to have the headaches checked out and ensure you have eliminated other causes as well.Health Question & Answer
