Answers:
Racing thoughts and sleep disturbance call for a visit to a psychiatrist. This does NOT mean you are crazy. It only means you need an evaluation. This is not something that should be managed by a family doctor, internist, or GP.Health Question & Answer

There are sleeping pills now that don't leave you feeling groggy.

Before resorting to medications though, here are some tips:

Try counting backward from 1000 -- it takes just a pinch of concentration but not enough to keep you awake but enough to keep your mind from wandering. If you lose track of where you were, don't worry about it -- just take a guess at where you were and start counting backwards again. Do this when you are laying down, and keep your eyes closed.

Another tip -- open your eyes as wide as you can, and don't close them until you absolutely cannot stop closing them. It will feel so good to finally close your eyes, it will relax you and you will want to keep your eyes closed.

Another tip -- have a small glass of wine or alcohol by your bedside (if you do not have a probelm with alcohol). Sip the wine or alcohol while you are sitting on the edge of the bed. Then, when you are finished drinking it, lay down. This may be enough to relax you and you'll fall asleep.

There is also something called 4-square breathing. While laying in bed, breathe in deeply to the count of four. Imagine the air going clear down to your feet -- you know, traveling from your lungs to your stomach, to your hips, upper legs, lower legs, then feet. Hold that breath to the count of four, then release breath to the count of 4 while imagining the air leaving your feet, going to your legs, etc. Then hold your breath again to the count of 4. Repeat this as often as you'd like -- it will really relax you.Health Question & Answer

My wife's kind of the same way but she gets by a bit better with Melatonin, dont know if you've tried it. It's a sleep aid that can be bought at any drug store, Wal-Mart, Target.. lots of places. Just every once in awhile when you feel you can, skip taking it a night or two and try a strong chamomile tea and maybe even a Yoga Nidra (it's a mental relaxing technique that doesnt involve any bending or stretching) or even some really soft music at a low volume, I hear Mozart's supposed to make you smarter-haha, I haven't tried it though, obviously =\.... But anyway, those ones are worth a try before rushing off to the doctor, herbal sleep aids are alot less addictive than pharmaceudical.Health Question & Answer

I've had those same problems for a few years and i finally just went to the doctor. I was prescribed the generic 10mg ambien called zolpidem. I take one 20 minutes before i want to go to sleep and i'm out like a light bulb and wake up feeling great. Just be honest with your doc and he or she should be able to help you out.Health Question & Answer
