How do you know if a mug is safe to drink from (details inside)?!

Question: How do you know if a mug is safe to drink from (details inside).?
Awhile back my mom bought me a cute mug. Luckily she looked underneath it, and there was a little sticker that said something like "this item contains high amounts of lead and should only be used for decorative purposes." I can't remember the exact wording, but it wasn't one of those that said "This item contains chemicals that are known to the state of california to cause birth defects, etc." It actually said not to drink from it.

How can I tell if I am buying a safe mug.? How do I get one that doesn't have tons of lead in it.?Health Question & Answer

There is a big difference between the CA prop 65 warning that the item contains lead or contains chemicals known to cause cancer and birth defects, and a sticker saying it is only for decorative purposes.

There are materials with lead, like lead crystal, that are perfectly safe to drink out of. By CA law they must be labeled, but the lead atoms are integrated in the crystal structure and aren't going to get into your drink.

Now, with ceramics, there are a lot of possible forms the lead could be in. If I were you I wouldn't use it to drink from.

How can you tell if you buy a safe mug.? Actually, it's easy in California. Shop at reputable stores like Target or Macy's or Pier 1 or KMart, etc. By law, if any products contain lead they HAVE to have the prop 65 warning visible. I usually see it as a big sign that is hard to miss. If you see a section without that sign, it is safe. I wouldn't shop at sketchy places like dollar stores or the flea market.

Ok, don't use THAT ceramic mug. Most coffee mugs are glazed with lead-free colors. IF it has a warning about lead, like that mug you have, I wouldn't use it.Health Question & Answer

I dont think you can tell from the naked eye..but they do have a new device where it scans items in your house n can tell you if its a dangerous item like if it has 2 much lead in it or a dangerous chemical.Health Question & Answer

I stay away from any kind that looks like it's a ceramic decorative. It's best just to buy a mug that is intended for the purpose of drinking out of. Safest that way. Health Question & Answer
