Hi,

First off all I know how frustrating it is to get a restless sleep or out of the habit of going to bed late! I am a shift worker myself.

To get a handle on this try by going to bed 30 minutes earlier every other night, that way you train your body and mind to slowly but hopefully permanently adjust to the time you want to sleep.

Tiredness and going to bed late has many disadvantages and negative side effects. Sleep deprivation effects can cause other serious health related problems such as depression, hypertension, heart disease, tremors and slurred speech. People who are experiencing drastic weight changes may be experiencing the sleep deprivation effects. The quality of sleep we get affects our hormone levels that affect our appetite. If we are not getting proper sleep, this could trigger a hormone deficiency, which may cause an individual to eat more and thus gain weight.

sleeping problems can be a serious underlining health problem that you may not be aware of so I advice you to seek a doctor. For now, make a schedule as a reminder like how you have errands or appointments to accommodate your sleeping hours. You can make the schedule to work around your reading time. You can use an alarm clock to remind yourself to go to bed. I have insomnia but I am 47 with health issues. Not knowing your age it could be something serious or something fearful happened that may have triggered you not to go to sleep. It could be one of the books you are reading. Just refresh your memory or steps of how and when all this sleepless nights began and start from there. Hope this helps.Health Question & Answer

For some people reading puts them to sleep. But for others (like me) it stimulates my mind so I have to avoid reading after the time I have set to go to bed. Make your bed a sanctuary for sleep. Don't watch TV and read in bed, and your mind will associate your bed with sleep only and it will become much easier. After you set a routine time stick with it. It's easy to slip away from good habits. If you find your thoughts racing try to meditate and focus only on your breathing. It's relaxing.

This has always worked for me. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

I used to have this very same problem. Heres what you do but make sure its not on a school/work day.

You will end up not going to sleep until you usually do so im not going to tell you to go two hours earlier than you would normally. Go to bed like you have been...But MAKE yourself get up early in the morning and dont take a nap at all during the day. By the end of the night you will be so tired your body wont let you stay up. It works trust me.Health Question & Answer
