Question: Can anyone help me with a piece of research (I am useless lol).?
I need to find out roughly how long ago the knowledge of smoking being bad to an unborn baby was found, does anyone know.? I have tried loads of searches but it isn't really my strong point. So please, if anyone knows when this started to be researched I would be so grateful!

You could try the above link. It takes you to the World Health Organisation who promote a Global Health Library & have a virtual platform with previous publications.

Alternatively you could try http://www.rcog.org.uk/ This takes you to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology. If anything you could phone and ask. It's the sorte of thing they would know about & would save you the hassle of finding out!

Both of these sources are most reliable and therefore preferable to a random google search!

The earliest I have found is 1957.

1957: Effect of maternal smoking during pregnancy on children's birth weight studied. (Simpson WJ. A preliminary report on cigarette smoking and the incidence of prematurity. Am J Obstet Gynecol 1957;73:808-815)

I hope this helps.
