I've got a horrible cold - will this help? I'm serious - see details?!

Question: I've got a horrible cold - will this help.? I'm serious - see details.?
Gin and Orange Juice.?
I figure most cough medicines are alcohol based, and that the orange juice is full of vitimin C.

Please don't just assume that alcohol is unhealthy ( remember red wine is good for your heart) - I would like to hear from someone who really knows - sources would be goodHealth Question & Answer

Hmm that is an interesting question. Vitamin C is suppose to help prevent colds-but I can't say for sure if it is true. And Gin, well... it's Gin so ok. If nothing else, it would help you sleep, which is great when suffering from a cold. And in theory the Vitamin C would help boost your immune system. So it sounds good. If you are of legal age, why not give it a try.? If nothing else you might get a good night's sleep. They say theres no real cure for the common cold...just ways to help alleviate the sympoms for awhile. Good luck with it-hope u feel better soon.Health Question & Answer

I dont know about the gin and juice. If you have a blocked nose you can flush the sinus area with warm salty water. find a small bottle with a top you can fit in a nostril. Stand over a sink or bath, turn your head to the side put bottle in the upper most nostril and allow water to flow through - it takes a second to come out the other nostril as it flows through the sinus'. Then do the same on the other side. (If you have access to a Neti pot - at health food stores mostly - then even better.)
This helps wash out the sinus cavities and makes it easier to breath, which helps you get better quicker. Health Question & Answer

Both gin and orange juice will burn (both for obvious reasons) your throat (assuming you have a sore throat) but alcohol that's stronger that gin can clean out your nose like you wouldn't even believe. Vitamin C isn't a treatment for anything unless you've got a deficiency but it's always good for you.

Your right though, wine is good for your heart in moderation but if you abuse it, it will have the same affect as any other alcoholic beverage.

Depending on what your cold looks like (runny nose, sore throat etc. people get different symptoms from different viruses) i would just go for the old-fashioned decongestant or cough medicine. If it gets really bad you can ask your doctor for an antibiotic prescription.Health Question & Answer

There is really no need for the gin- it won't be bad for you as such but as it is processed by the liver you may want to give all your organs the chance to work while you are sick without the added drain of processing Gin. Cough medicines are sometimes alcohol based but the proportions are very different! The best thing for a cold is the juice, water, rest and something like echinacea.Health Question & Answer

Hmmm...honestly, you MIGHT have something here! :)

Although, most cough medicines are actually based with menthol (throat soother), so maybe try this mix and have some cough drops too.

A word of caution though with the alcohol part, alcohol turns to sugar, so that might fuel a cough (sugar and sweets add to mucus thus worsening coughs)

Hope this helped somewhat..if any.

Get better soon :)Health Question & Answer

OJ is good, but the gin will dehydrate you. Why not just go get some real cough and cold medicine from the corner store.? The alcohol in those are totally different than the grain alcohol in liquor. Dextromethorphan is the type of alcohol used in these, and ethyl alcohol is in gin. Health Question & Answer

That is very stupid. Cough medicine is composed of a different alcohol than what you drink, aka Gin. It would be best to take some cold medicine or see a dr. because colds are viruses that mutate every few hours, so you can't cure it. Sit it out or wait it out for 4 days watchin tv.Health Question & Answer
