Answers:
If the abscess doesn't drain on it's own, then yes- you really would need to have it incised and drained. It shouldn't require a surgeon to do it, a decent doctor should be able to handle that. In the meantime, you can increase the chance it will drain itself by applying moist heat. You want it as hot as you can stand it, without scalding yourself of course, and put on as often as you can do it. If you own a heating pad, use that to keep steady heat on it. You also want to take those antibiotics, expensive as they are. Those will help play backup guard for your immune system and let it concentrate on that abscess. It will also help keep things in control, so the infection doesn't end up all over. A breast abscess is nasty, but there isn't a reason to be really frightened. It's not much different than an abscess elsewhere on the body, really. It will respond to the same things, namely heat and antibiotics. Stay out of the bra for the duration though, until it does drain. You don't need the extra aggravation or rubbing. With a bit of luck, and a lot of heat, it should form a white head center, and drain itself. Before that happens, you will want to get some guaze pads and antibacterial soap. When it drains, the drainage usually smells something awful, and you want to keep that off healthy skin so the infection can't possibly spread to new zones. Use the antibacterial soap and a clean washrag to keep that area clean, then put the bandage on to absorb the drainage. Wash your hands before and after, toss the old bandage in the trash, and the washcloth in the wash. Don't use it twice, and don't use it anywhere else. Once they drain, the pain usually is nearly gone and they tend to heal fairly fast. It will get really painful right before it drains, and the moment it drains you will feel immense relief. Good luck, and remember- moist heat, and lots of it.Health Question & Answer
