Sudden increase in heart rate?!

Question: Sudden increase in heart rate.?
Sometimes I get a sudden increase in heart rate out of nowhere. I'll be sitting down, watching TV or something, and my heart will sort of jump and start beating really fast for like maybe 2 or 3 seconds and it'll be over. Sometimes I feel like coughing because it beats really fast out of nowhere.

I'm 21. I don't drink caffinated drinks or anything, and I don't eat junk food. I'm also about 14 pounds underweight, could that have something to do with it.? But I've been underweight for all my life, and this started happening only recently a few times.
And I don't exercise, so I know that's not it.

any one have any ideas.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
It could be a hormonal imbalance. Or any number if things really. See a doctor about it, as you could have an electrical problem, or any number of things. A simple ECG, and blood tests can rule out a ton of things. it could just be little anxiety attacks, that you don't have to worry about. But probably not.

I had a similar thing, mine was hormonal- aftes seeing a good doctor. A doctor at a walk-in place tried to give me anti-anxiety pills (don't take those unless you know for sure that's the problem, cause it sounds to me like it's not for you either. They can make you more anxious.)

Sometimes exercise can help regulate your heartbeat and is often recommended. But see a doc before you start a routine.Health Question & Answer

Ask your doctor and he if you can have an EKG. You may be going into afib (atrial fibrillation). when this rhythm continues for a few hours it can cause small blood clots to accumulate in the top chambers of your heart and eventually will be pumped out of your heart and these clots can cause a stroke, or a clot can be lodged anywhere. also have your cardiac enzymes (blood test) should be done also since afib commonly occurs after/ with a heart attack. Breathing difficulties frequently occur because the heart is working fast but is not pumping efficiently so fluid can accumulate in your lung space which doesn't allow a lot of area for oxygen exchange to occur so you are short of breath.Health Question & Answer

You should go and visit your doctor and ask her to send you for an echo and an electrocardiograph. These will be able to tell you about what is going on.Health Question & Answer
