None!!

Do not use any cough syrups. Cough medicines, in particular suppressants are of no use to anyone, specially asthmatics. Coughing is basically the bodies natural way to remove/dislodge mucous and debris from the lungs, by suppressing this, it can theoretically increase the risk of secondary bacterial infection due to stasis. It's vital you DO not do this, being that when you have asthmatic episodes you will produce excess mucous.

Any inhalations like Vix can also potentially induce a spasm. Just take paracetamol for pain relief and any temperature and the virus will pass. Cough medicine will be of no therapeutic benefit, least of all to asthmatics. Chloraseptic or Diflam sprays might help any local throat discomfort.

For future referernce; If you have Asthma you need to be very careful what medicines you take, all syrups and inhalations can potentially induce a spasm. In one of the newspapers a few months back, I read that a boy had a fatal Asthma attack after taking a cough syrup. Stick to simple medications like paracetamol and drink warm soothing drinks. There are no cures for virus's. You just have to ride it out..

Edit
Expectorants are quite worthless too. Theoretically, expectorants liquefy mucus and facilitate it's removal from the lungs through coughing, but there is no scientific basis for this. All cough preparations can cause constipation. Large doses will cause respiratory depression and are always contradicted in people suffering from Asthma.

Monitor your peak flow reading, note any significant changes and seek medical attention if you have breathing difficulties.Health Question & Answer

If you insist on taking something for the cough (I don't recomend it though), PLEASE, do not take any anti-histamines, such as benadryl, or pseudo-ephedrine, and a few others. They will try to dry up the runny nose, but will also thicken the stuff in your lungs, making it more difficult to get it up and out. Couple that with asthma, and you are a pneumonia and or bronchitis waiting to happen. Look up Mucinex, its ingredient is guifenesin. That is what we medical people call an expectorant. It will loosen up the crud so you can get rid of it, which may help relieve the cough by the fact that the cause is removed, not the cough suppressed. Drink plenty of fluids, which also helps loosen up the crud. And please go see a clinic or Dr. if you continue to worsen, or start having difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, and or a high fever, racing pulseHealth Question & Answer
