As you age, is it normal for your voice to crackle? LOL?!

Question: As you age, is it normal for your voice to crackle.? LOL.?
When I call out for my hubby, or my son, my voice cracks. This is the only way I know how to describe it. I know when you reach puberty, your voice changes, but I didn't think your voice changed again as you got older. I'm almost in the fourth decade here...LOL...but really didn't expect my voice to crackle like this. It's only when I call out in a higher octive.
I've even noticed my voice has changed when I sing. I seem to have to try harder to hold a smooth tone to my voice. Ugh..this has got to be an age thing right.?

I'm not a smoker either, so I know it's not that.Health Question & Answer

Taking into consideration that you are almost in your fourth decade, it could be an "early" sign of menopause. I know when I started going through menopause in my 40's, my voice changed significantly - whereas I was singing soprano, in a matter of months I was singing alto - a real adjustment for me. :) Read the information contained in the source I listed. It was published several years ago, but I thought it might interest you.Health Question & Answer

Yes it is normal. It often is most noticed when you hit puberty but it also happens later in live too.

Some people just develop a normally crackly voice... especially when the person is under some kind of stress or is anxious. It also happens of you normally talk low but then try to talk loud... for example, it you are giving a speech. The first sound often does sound crackly.Health Question & Answer

I'm over 40, and my voice has changed, so much so that even my doctors comment on it. I have never smoked and I don't have acid reflux, nor am I in perimenopause, but I often lose my voice almost entirely, and it is definitely deeper. I had my throat scoped last December, and there are no nodules. Like Virginia, I sound much better when I sing alto, and I can't even hit many of the soprano notes anymore. I don't know what causes it, but it doesn't bother me at all, and my doctor says not to worry about it, so I don't. I did quit the choir, though. I like to think of myself as mysteriously sexy now that I have a deeper voice.Health Question & Answer

Yes it is normal for your voice to change as you age... some people just experience slightly more dramatic changes. I sang in high school and was classified as a high soprano, I am 23 now and sound much closer to alto... although I've picked up a nice smokey jazz tone ;-) (I did, however, smoke from the age of 10 until I was 22).

Age is certainly a possibility... but, if it could also be environmental irritants (dry air, allergens, etc) or hormonal changes (as a woman previously answered). To rule out hormonal changes, it doesn't hurt to go for a pelvic exam at least once a year. And, last but not least, over-using your voice can cause it to crack.Health Question & Answer
