If your body is in a state of unconsciousness, and all I remember on the night is having this weird dream like sensation during which I was watched myself dieing. The rest of my memory is a blank.
But over time the gaps have been filled in like a jigsaw puzzle during my sleep through flashbacks & nightmares, which always wakens me n fear.
I later found out the cause of this was that I was given some sought of drug, without knowing on the night which I reacted badly too.

Not very accurate, I'm afraid.
Forget what Freud says... Memory is remembered or rehearsed data ( or information) We take in this data in a visual form, even the stuff we don't want to take in..we see thousands of images each day...people we pass on the street, cars passing by ect.... Then there is the stuff we want to see, our friends, the tv show we watch, the book we read...
If we remembered every single one, we'd overload
All dreaming is, is our brain sorting through all these pieces of visual data,getting rid of the parts we don't need while storing the parts we do need into our subconscious. When that happens long forgotten images seep into the mix.
