How long will the Percocet withdrawals last?!

Question: How long will the Percocet withdrawals last.?
I have been taking Percocet for about a year and half for back pain and back surgery. My DR. wants to keep me on them until Feb. for weaning purposes however, I want to be off of them now. I take anywhere from 10 to 30 mgs a day depending on my pain. How severe will my withdrawals be.? I have tried to not take them for a day a felt so depressed. How long will that last.?Health Question & Answer

You have to do as the doctor tells you. I was on them a long time ago for the exact same reasons. I was on them longer than a year too. You can't just stop taking them without feeling jittery, anger at times and depression. Your body is so used to that medication, it has come the point of "wanting" the drug. That's what drug dependency is. I'm sure you know that. However, the best way, and I mean the BEST WAY to get off that drug is by weaning. You will feel much better. I know this not as a nurse, but from a personal point of knowledge. I tried to get off mine just like you. I went nuts and had to be weaned off. Do yourself a favor and be weaned off. Your doctor may also give you a mild tranquilizer while being weaned off. Don't be afraid to take it, you will need it, maybe. It's all up to you and how much you can tolerate. Hope this shed some light on that. Be blessed
EDIT I'm sorry, I just realized you wanted to know how long it would take. I can tell you how long it took me. My doctor started off with 1 tab, every 6 hrs, instead of 2 every 4 hrs. This went on for 2 days to give my body a chance to adjust. Next, it went to every eight hours, 1 tab. for 2 days, after that, it became 1 tablet every 12 hrs, only 2 day. Once I could tolerate that, he didn't take them away, he told me if I could go the weekend without one, then I will be ok. It worked for me. So it only took a little more than a week. I took the mild tranquilizer for the first 3 days and that was it. It's not an easy thing to do. Many people think because it prescribed, it's ok to take without realizing what they are doing to themselves. You sound so much like me, it's scary lol. I know you will be fine, you've already begun.Health Question & Answer

Honey you need to cut yourself down gradually-don't just stop taking them! No wonder you feel sick! If you can do it, take away one dose for a couple of days, then-maybe break the tablet in half, and take a half of one in the am, and 1 at night.

It may be better if you wait for the doctor-or at least tell him/her that you ARE cutting yourself down(they will be pleased with that)but you obviously;y need them for SOME pain-so let them know ok.?

Be easy on yourself-don't just stop. Keep a log of what time you took your last dose, and go from there, the weaning will be less painful mentally if you don't just STOP them. See, that is how I had to go off one of my own meds, and it really sucked!

Good for you, in doing the weaning yourself! Don't become an addict like me-Health Question & Answer

Honestly, the best idea is just to taper down. This will RADICALLY reduce the withdrawals! The most sever symptoms will last a few days...but up to a few weeks to detox. No fun! I would suggest taking your doctors advice and wean yourself off them. Otherwise you may need to cease work/school or daily activities because you will be sick for some time!

So how long will it last.? There is no way to tell until you do it. But likely at least a week. Check out this website:

Good luck! I'm happy for you that you want to get off them. It's hard decision to make! And you are obviously a very strong individual if you want to cease the use of them immediately! I'm sure there are some tips out there for speeding up the process, or reducing the symptoms. Like eating healthy, or trying a juice detox to cleanse your system. Just ideas, I don't know how well they will work.Health Question & Answer
