Which means that I'm ALWAYS exhausted in school, even though I have all A's :) Anyway, midnight is the earliest i can fall asleep and it really sucks! I just want to go to bed, but I cant. Can you help.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Try speaking with your parents and have them schedule you a doctors appointment.

It sounds like sleep apnea.

Don't buy any sleeping pills from the convenience store because there is a risk of dependency.

Before a doctor can help you, you will need to figure out a few things on your own by keeping a little notebook/diary of your habits. Here are some things to make note of...Just write down the date on each page and note the following:

1. Diet--are you having caffeine after lunchtime.? It could be in soda, chocolate, energy drinks, etc. Jot down your food & drinks everyday on a page...eat healthy food, not too much sugar, not too much junk. Go for balanced meals and getting in those 5 fruits and veggies per day.

2. Exercise: Did you get plenty of exercise today.? Everyone needs at least 30 minutes per day. You could walk the dog, ride your bike, play tennis, do yoga, play soccer or other ball with your friends, but it is important to just get out and move.

3. Stress level: Are you worried about anything or everything.? Is school too hard, too much homework.? Is your home life OK.? Parents fighting, divorcing.? Boyfriend/girlfriend troubles.? Do you find your mind racing with thoughts at night, even when you should be relaxing and drifting off to sleep.? Ask yourself what things are in your mind that keep you from relaxing and drifting off to sleep. Write them down every day and see if you can see a pattern or a theme.

Hopefully after keeping a journal for a week or two, you will see some behaviors you can change that will help you sleep better. It goes without saying that you should not go to bed with the TV or radio on, talking on the phone or texting, etc.

My son, 17, is a great sleeper now, but when he was about 10, he was very anxious about everything...he used to lie in bed and worry about everything that MIGHT happen, such as a house fire might happen, a burglary, etc. ...and these irrational fears kept him from relaxing...once I realized that he was having this anxiety, I took him to a child therapist, and he was fine in a short amount of time, with no medication needed.

Sometimes it takes looking at oneself to realize that there is a problem, and that is the first step in fixing it. I am really proud of my son, because he helped himself by being willing to look at his behavior identify what might be a problem and work toward fixing it.

Now, he could sleep through a tornado, I think! (But I hope not!)

Good luck, sweetie! Get some rest soon!

P.S. In spite of what some other answerers have said, unless you are seriously obese, the odds of you having sleep apnea are slim. Besides, with sleep apnea, you stop breathing AFTER you are already asleep; it doesn't stop someone from actually falling asleep.Health Question & Answer
