Question about hormones, birth control, mood swings, and ANXIETY..HELP PLEASE?!

Question: Question about hormones, birth control, mood swings, and ANXIETY..HELP PLEASE.?
Hello everyone...Okay let me start out giving a little history- Sorry if this is lengthy- I'm 21 years old and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety when i was 17. I've been taking Effexor XR since 2005, which has greatly controlled it. My boyfriend and I just recently moved in together. I don't want to get pregnant, am still in school and just AM NOT ready for a baby, and DO NOT believe in abortion. So birth control seems to be my best bet in preventing this. Over the years I've tried a few different birth controls, and haven't been on one since my junior year of high school. In the past I've taken- Yasmin, YAZ, the patch, the generic kind from planned parenthood, Ortho Evra and the ring. I've had absolutely no luck with any of those. I feel like i'm losing my mind when i'm on birth control. I have severe anxiety (which i haven't experienced since i began the Effexor), MOOD SWINGS, I cry for no reason, i'm EXTREMELY irritable, constantly tired...etc.
I recently went to see my doctor and she suggested Ortho Tri Cyclen LO
This is my first week on it, and i must say i am a little reluctant to stick with it. Within the past few days I've noticed an increase in my irritability and emotions. I hate feeling out of control of my emotions and ha this is how the birth control makes me feel.?
Does anyone else experience this.? Why is it that our hormones have such a HUGE impact on our moods.?.? If i stick with it can will it "pass".? Any suggestions.? HAHA thanks for taking the time to read this!Health Question & Answer

Wow you've tried just about everything. You'd definitely be an excellent source of info on types of birth control, haha.

It's rough that you're dealing with this now, usually the first few months moving in together are rocky... and being irritable definitely won't help. You need to focus on trying to be rational, even when you're really angry. You'll need to try really hard to take a couple steps back and think before you say something that you'll regret when your mood swings back to A-OK.

OTC lo is a low dose form of birth control. Your doc suggested it in hopes that less hormones=less tears for you.

It can take your body 3 months to get used to the hormones. So it may get better.

But there's no guaranteeing that. It's possible that you're one of the many women that can't handle hormonal birth control. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you... the hormones affect you differently.

So I would say stick with it for a couple months. If things don't get better, stop taking them. also, talk to your boyfriend about it. Be sure he knows and ask him to do his best to overlook your irritability...

You could ask about the mini-pill (progestin only) if you haven't tried it already.

There is an alternative. Avoid the hormones all together! Try the copper IUD Paraguard. Of course there's people who had problems with it, like any kind of birth control, but it may work for you! Plus, the IUD is the most cost-effective form of birth control... it last 10 years.

also, using a spermicidal lubed condom as well as a spermicidal foam will protect you. I'm unable to use hormonal birth control because I have a history of blood clots, and this is the prevention my doctor recommended. It's also very impt that I don't get pregnant, because the meds I'm on due to the blood clots could kill me and the fetus if I got pregnant.. so it must be pretty effective if they recommended it for me.

Good luck, with your new living arrangements and your search for a birth control method!Health Question & Answer

Trial and error my friend.. good luck try and IUD.?Health Question & Answer

Hi Jasmine,
Sorry to hear you are going through so many emotions right now. But by the sounds of it, it seems anyone would fluxuate having been on so many many different birth controls.
Don't give up on your current meds. Give it a few months to regulate.
Yasmin works great for my daughter, even though before it she had all your same symptoms. How long did you give that one a try.?
I suggest letting your Dr know that you are having all these other issues. Maybe a different Dr though, would have another idea, instead of your current one that switches your meds up so often.
Good luck!Health Question & Answer
