Less effective birth control?!

Question: Less effective birth control.?
I am overweight, with a BMI of 28. I used to weight about 20 pounds less, and since the beginning of summer (and starting the pill at the end of summer) when I stopped exercising and starting eating more I started putting on weight.

I've read that having a BMI of higher than 27 puts you at a 60% higher chance of getting pregnant on the pill. My boyfriend and I usually use condoms, but the other day we didn't. I have also been eating a lot of antacids before I heard that THOSE might affect the pill too.

How worried should I be.? Because I feel really worried and I think I need to calm down.Health Question & Answer

Tums are actually a good source of calcium and I personally have never heard that they could affect the pill.I have heard too much vitamin C can most definately affect the pill and this was straight from a Doctor's mouth. As well as St.John's Wort and also certain forms of Ginseng.I am always cautious about taking my pill under 2 hours from other pills.

also if you've stopped excercising all of a sudden after doing it for awhile you can see weight gain happen in no time.Trust me on this one.I say keep excercising and you can't go wrong.Health Question & Answer

Two forms doubles your chances of contraception. But probably your chances are still good anyway. Just test for pregnancy.Health Question & Answer

that is a load of crap.....in fact a lot of times when start on birth control...you gain weight..Health Question & Answer

Go on a diet. Then you don't have to worry about it.Health Question & Answer

First, calm down.

Where you did you read that.? If it isn't from a website or textbook endorsed by the CDC, FDA, AHA, FDA approved pharamceutical company or any doctor, than it's probably wrong.

also, any birth control can be made less effective by many other factors besides weight. Other medications can interact with the b/c and decrease the effects, certain diseases, etc. There is no definitive proof that antacids have an effect on the effectiveness of your birth control, and since antacids should only be taken for stomach upset, it's not likely any way.

Talk with your doctor about your concerns. He or she will probably discuss different birth control methods and medications to put you on to ease your mind.

In the meantime, start taking control of your weight. Exercise regularly, eat healthier and get plenty of sleep.

Good luck.Health Question & Answer
