Okay to have irregular periods? Should I see a doctor (Maybe TMI)?!

Question: Okay to have irregular periods.? Should I see a doctor (Maybe TMI).?
Well I'm 18 and I've had my period since I was 12. It started out being VERY regular....actually pretty over regular, it came every 3 weeks or so, and I never missed one from the get go. But for the last year or two it's been kinda irregular, I will sometimes skip a month, and one time I even skipped 5 months, and it's been coming late. Sometimes it's on time or just a couple days late, sometimes more...but like this cycle I was supposed to start on the 12th and I just started today. I was under the impression that this was all fine, but I told my mom and she thinks something should be wrong, she is a doctor and really tends to assume the worst in things, so she wants me to get checked out. Do you think somethings could be wrong with me.? If so, what sorts of things.? thank you.Health Question & Answer

I would agree with your Mother. While there is a chance you may have some sort of problem, it never hurts to get things checked out. Plus, at age 18 you should begin getting a yearly PAP test and pelvic exam. It doesn't hurt and is as important as going to the dentist!!Health Question & Answer

It is probably nothing major but maybe your body is changing and your cyle is also changing. If you do alot of sports, your period changes too. Seeing a doctor is a good idea, he might put you on the pill (not for sex reasons) to regulate your period, If is probably something simple like that.Health Question & Answer

Some ppl just have irregular periods. I wouldnt worry too much unless ur sexually active and having unprotected sex. If you are thats not good becasue pregnancy is always a factor. But if ur not then just go to the doctor and get checked out. It wont hurt to know whats causing ur missed period.Health Question & Answer

your period can become irregular for any number of reasons. before assuming the worst, i'd say it has either changed because of hormones. your hormones change and fluctuate throughout your life, nothing a birth control pill wont fix.Health Question & Answer
