Diagnostic laparoscopy or not?!

Question: Diagnostic laparoscopy or not.?
After being referred to the hospital with suspected Endometriosis of the bowel, I was given the option of having a laparoscopy to confirm this.
I was also given the option of simply "assuming" I had Endometriosis and going on the contraceptive pill to ease the symptoms.
I chose the Laparoscopy as I am keen to know if I have Endo and how bad it is, as I want to know if it will affect me in terms of fertility (I am 30 and I have no children and would like to have them in the future)
I am very apprehensive about the procedure and wanted to know what people think about it. Might i have been better to simply assume I have it and take the pill or have I made the right decision.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.Health Question & Answer

Hi there,
I am sorry that you are going through this and that you might have Endometriosis.

I just had a diagnostic lap. back in August. Honestly, I would have it done if I were you. You need to know what is truly going on with your body so that you can get the proper care and treatment. The procedure itself really isn't too bad at all. I would do it again tomorrow if I had to. It doesn't take very long at all. They make 2 small incisions, one in your belly button and one lower, like between your ovaries. Next they fill your stomach with gas and look around with a small camera. You will be given anesthesia before so you don't feel anything during the procedure. You will also be given pain medication, and they will give you more when you wake up if you are in pain. The only thing I would suggest is ask the doctor to please give you anti-nausea medicine before the procedure so you don't wake up feeling nauseous. Recovery time is a week to a couple weeks, depending on how fast you typically heal but you will be up walking within a couple of days. Mine wasn't too bad, I had more pain because I started my period the next day. Now I know why my periods are so painful, I do have Endometriosis.

I hope that you are confident in your decision to have the lap done, honestly, I believe you have made the right choice. You need to know for sure what is wrong. I hope that you start feeling better and that you don't have endometriosis. If you have more questions, go ahead and email me any time. I hope that this helps.Health Question & Answer

I had one a few years ago to establish serious adhesions from an appendix op. It was ok. They fill your tum with gas to have a good look around though and I was a bit stiff and sore under my ribs for a few days and bled just a teeny bit. It's a reasonably minor proceedure and there shouldn't be any long term affects.Health Question & Answer

I think you are better off knowing. I would have chosen the same way.Health Question & Answer

I would be careful. I had one and it ruined my eyes.Health Question & Answer
