The 12 year old girl my sister babysits just got her cycle. The girls mom will not let her wear tampons. She says she is too young. I agree. My sister thinks it is gross to make her wear pads. What do you think is the right age to start wearing tampons.?Health Question & Answer

In my opinion, if she's old enough to have a period, she's old enough to use tampons provided she is educated about their proper use and knows how to be responsible. The last thing you want is for her to forget to change it and have her get TSS. Her body is changing and she's going through a difficult time right now. It wouldn't be a very good idea to tell her that she's becoming a woman and, in the same breath, insinuate that she's not old enough to use a simple tampon. I think 13 or 14 would be a better age, but I don't think it really matters. Concern for young girls would be their hymen or tightness, but I think that even young girls are able to wear tampons.
Pads are gross, but so are tampons. As long as she is changing it regularly, the only one who should be able to smell it is her. I don't see why people think it's any less gross to have all that blood and tissue trapped inside you all week.

I started wearing tampons when I was 11 and got my period. It is not disgusting, it is not sexual. It's a tampon to stop your clothes from staining. What IS disgusting is being whatever age and wearing a pad which is like a diaper. The blood will not only leak, but it'll get all over you and be a big, nasty mess. It's much easier to just wear a tampon. I don't understand why either of you think it is wrong to wear tampons at a young age.

I started wearing tampons with my first period at age 9.
There is no right age for it, it just depends on what the girl's preferences and lifestyle is like. If you're a very active girl and have a heavy flow (like I was and did), pads make your life that much more miserable.

i agree that its not so much age as it is knowing your cycle. once you figure out how heavy your flow is you should be fine. i got my first period at 12 and i used tampons the 3rd time i had it because my flow was really heavy the first time. i think that whenever you feel she is responsible enough to take care of it. u cant be there to remind her everytime to change her tampon so she has to take that on but pads are like diapers and i always felt like i everyone could see them as well. hope it helps...xHealth Question & Answer
