no...... it used to be one week, but now they say to use condoms for at least TWO WEEKS, after you start.................... if i were you though id go with the Nuvaring instead, you dont have to remember to take a pill, and it lasts a whole month, its a lil plastic ring, like a hair tie, that you squeeze into a lil oval and put it in there, as high as it goes, it cant get lost, it wont fall out, and it releases the medicine throughout the month.. when your done, you take it out, toss it, and put a new one in.. very simple, but wait 2 weeks when you put the first one in, one you use them and start changing them, you dont have to wait anymore, just change and go..Health Question & Answer

It depends on when you start taking the pill.. If you start taking the pill within the first five days of your cycle (the first day of your period is day 1), you are protected IMMEDIATELY.. If you start at any other point in your cycle, you are protected after seven days of active pills.. According to Planned Parenthood:

"If you start the combination pill within five days after the start of your period, take the first active pill of the first pack.. You will not need to use a back up method of birth control.. You are protected against pregnancy immediately..

If you start the combination pill at any other time during your menstrual cycle, take the first active pill of the first pack.. Use another method of birth control if you have vaginal intercourse during the first week of combination pill use
