Surgical anaesthetics basically stop your intestines from moving stuff from point A (your stomach) to point B (... well, the toilet). They are temporarily paralysed, and then very slow to start working again. Morphine also constipates the heck out of you. It is normal to be a bit backed up after surgery...
BUT!!!
Eight days is too long! You need to go to the doctor. I don't mean to scare you, but if your surgery was abdominal, it's uncommon but still possible that there's a little kink in part of your intestine, preventing anything from moving anywhere. If your surgery was not on your abdomen, you could just be really, really constipated.
Forget about laxatives. Get an aenima, and if that doesn't work, get a doc.Health Question & Answer

Foods that have special recognition as laxatives include almonds, apricots (dried), avocados, chicory, coconut, dandelion, dates, endive, figs, flaxseed, grapes, mango's, olive, papayas, parsley, persimmons, pineapple, prunes, rhubarb, soybeans, turnips, walnuts, watercress.
Include a combination of these in your diet as fresh salads, soups or snacks. Increase your intake of the above and if still constipated, increase again and lessen your intake of meat, dairy and high processed food.
Lack of water in your system is a large contributing factor to constipation. Water is essential to many bodily actions and elimination of waste is very high on the list. NOT tea, coffee or soft drink, but pure WATER. Add some lemon or fresh fruit juice for flavour if needed, but drink water

I think this can happen. I'd avoid using a laxative as it will deplete you of vitamins and minerals you need for your recovery. My combination always works for me:
At least 2 cups of very strong coffee - with a little milk if you prefer.
Citrus fruits like oranges.
Then some carbonated water to help push it out.
You'll feel a lot better!
Have fun!
