First-time yeast infection questions, does boyfriend need to be treated as well & do they go away on their own?!

Question: First-time yeast infection questions, does boyfriend need to be treated as well & do they go away on their own.?
A few days after my period, I noticed some itching around my crotch area. This went on for 2-3 days without becoming severe. I then had sex with my boyfriend yesterday, but it did not feel good, so I had him pull out. He noticed little chunks of white discharge on his penis, so we eventually came to the conclusion that I had a yeast infection. I have never had one before. We just went and purchased the generic store brand of Monistat 3-Day with three vaginal suppositories and three applicators (I'd heard that the actual Monistat brand burns upon application, so I didn't want to take any chances with that). I am a little puzzled by the applicators and the suppositories, but I'll figure it out tonight before use. I am 25 years old, to give some background.

I was wondering, since we had sex while I had the yeast infection, does he need to get treated as well.? I have read that he could cause me to get another vaginal yeast infection if we had sex again after I treat what I have now. How does a male get treated for this.? We will not be having sex until I am rid of this yeast infection.

also, do vaginal yeast infections ever go away on their own, or do they always need to be cured with OTC or doctor-prescribed treatments.? Are there any side effects of waiting more than a few days to get treated.?

Thank you for any knowledgeable help and advice.Health Question & Answer

if your bf is circumcised, then he shouldn't need to be treated. if he's not circumcised, then keep this in mind if the yeast infections return. in other words, he shouldn't need to worry about treating himself unless you get recurring yeast infections and you and your doctor can't figure out why.

it is advisable to see a doctor the first time you get a yeast infection, but i doubt many people actually do. one benefit of seeing a doctor is that there is a pill called Diflucan that will cure the yeast infection without the suppositories and creams. If a guy is treated for a yeast infection, he will likely be given a pill like Diflucan.

A yeast infection can go away on its own, depending on changes in the chemistry of your vagina over the course of your cycle. having your period will almost always cure a yeast infection. If you decide to prolong treatment, chances are it will only get worse, become more itchy and with a larger quantity of yeast. once you experience itching, you should treat it because it will drive you crazy if you let it go. i don't believe there are any side effects from waiting other than discomfort, and possibly a bacterial infection if you scratch at it.

i used to get them a lot until i started taking a supplement called Acidophilus. It is pro-biotic bacteria that eat the yeast. they also aid in digestion. I take it in capsule form, which i buy at Whole Foods. It is also found in yogurt. if you're worried about your boyfriend, you should both try acidophilus.

if your yeast infection doesn't go away or returns after you use the monistat you should see your doctor.

Health Question & Answer

A yeast infection itches like nobody's business, white discharge isn't the only symptom. If the OTC treatment doesn't work, see a doctor and get checked out. If he gets any itching, he should be checked as well. There are some vaginal infections that are a lot worse than yeast. Health Question & Answer

If you have never had a yeast infection you should go to your Gyno and get a diagnosis. Honestly, what you are describing does not sound like a yeast infection because with yeast you would be getting a ferocious itch and burning as well as thick discharge. Since your discharge is abnormal and you are itching, it sounds like you have something for sure. I just think that you need to find out what it is before you treat it. Health Question & Answer

If you have never had a yeast infection before it is best to see your doctor because it could be something else. No they do not go away on their own and sometimes not even with Monistat, sometimes an oral antibiotic is needed such as Diflucan. Best way to prevent yeast infections is to watch your sugar intake and to eat at least one cup of yogurt(sugar free, Yoplait blue is sugar free) dailyHealth Question & Answer
