You shouldn't smoke ANY time--but it's worse if you're taking birth control pills, which affect your circulatory system making your more susceptible to blood clotting disorders--which can lead to heart attacks. Smoking can exacerbate all the nasty symptoms of BC pills also. There is a very high risk for heart attack and stroke when you smoke and it increases a lot when you are also taking BC pills.

Smoking introduces nicotine into the blood system. Nicotine affects red blood cells, and paired with The Pill, can cause blood clots.
If you are a smoker, I would suggest Condoms or contraceptive foam as an alternative. Or better yet, give up smoking.

smoking and the pill if used for a long time can cause blood clots, my sister just passed away from a blood clot in her lung and she had been on the pill and smoked for 20 years.Health Question & Answer
