I've been on the pills for years and not gained weight or had any side effects other than finally being free of crippling cramps and really heavy periods. You need to use some method of protection so do your research and figure out which is best for you. Birth control is even more effective than condoms at preventing pregnancy. I have no idea how old you are, but you might just want to discuss this with your physician.Health Question & Answer

The pill is more effective than condoms, plus condoms are really fiddly and interrupt sex.
The pill can change your body weight in the slightest way, honestly...if you DO end up putting on weight you would not be able to tell at all.

I go to connections for the pill as it's free. They also give you loads of advice and tell you if you are able to go on the pill.

Advantages:
- Can make your bleeds more regular, lighter and less painful (y)!
- Reduces the risk of cancer in the ovary, womb and colon.
- Can reduce acne in some women.
- Doesn't interrupt sex.

Disadvantages:
- Some women may get side effects at first such as nausea, headaches, and tenderness in the breasts.
- Does not protect you from sexually transmitted infections
- Unexpected bleeding can occur (randomly getting spots of blood in underwear).

You can not use the pill if you:
- Are already pregnant
- Are very overweight
- Take certain medicines
- Have had thrombosis (blood clots), heart disease or high blood pressure, very severe migraines, and other things (relate to people over 35+ etc).

There are serious risks and side effects that are VERY RARE to occur in most women such as:
- Blod clot that can block a vein (Venous Thrombosis) or an artery (Arterial Thrombosis, heart attack or stroke)
- Breast cancer, cervical cancer and a very rare liver cancer (still being researched)
- And other side effects such as breathlessness, coughing up blood, weakness or numbness (pins and needles).
If any of these ever did ever occur then you should immediatly contact a doctor or nurse.

Hope this helped!

safe sex is always the way to go. gaining weight while being on the pill is just a myth. there have been a lot of studies that have shown that. birth control is a good option for many reasons. one it helps keep your cyle regular. it also helps with different kinds of cancers. i would talk to your doctor about options. well m in the same boat! m skeptical about taking pills too! i read a lot about it and what i came to know is that pills donot increase fat in ur body. they just lead to water retention. this may make u look bloated. also, what kind of side effects u may r may not experience will depend upon the kind of pill u take n also on how ur body responds to it. good luck!Health Question & Answer

Some people suffer side effects but not many and it doesn't make you put on weight. It can actually be good for your cycle. cant have it both ways unfortunately unless you go through the unnecessary expense and awkward moments of using condoms every time. Health Question & Answer

Get on the pill so you don't get pregnant. Gaining weight due to the pill is a thing of, say, 20 years ago. Some may make you natious, but it just depends on what type you're on and how your body deals with it.Health Question & Answer
